10 ways to avoid distractions when working from home

Flexible working practices were already becoming popular before the COVID-19 pandemic. Since many people have been forced to work from home during the coronavirus lockdowns, it is now likely that remote working will become even more prevalent.

Remote working has benefits for both businesses and workers. However, not everyone is a fan of the practice. Some people find it difficult to adjust to not having a boss and co-workers with them when they work. One of the most common challenges people face when they first start working at home, though, is that they find it hard to stay focused.

There are potentially more distractions in your home than there would be in an office. And with no one watching you, it can be tempting to let some of those distractions get in the way of you working efficiently. So if you are finding it tricky to stay focused, here are ten tips on how to not get distracted when you are working from home.

  1. Get dressed for work

When you are working from home, get up and get dressed, just as you would if you were working in an office. Then, work to a fixed timetable, including having set times for breaks and lunch. You will find much less of a challenge to focus on work if you are dressed for work and you stick to a schedule.

  1. Set up a working area

If you can, designate a room in your home as your working-from-home office. Or if a separate room is not available, make one corner in your home your working space. Sitting on the couch when you are working is not a great way to stay focused. The sofa will be too comfortable, which might make you feel drowsy, and you will associate your home couch with relaxing.

  1. Tell your family and friends what your work hours are

You will find that people will be less reluctant to disturb you when you are working if they know you are not in an office, so it will be crucial that your family and friends understand that when you are working from home, you do not want to be disturbed. Tell people what your working hours are and ask them not to disturb you during those hours unless there is an emergency.

  1. Play some music

One of the things that people miss when they work from home is the general background noise of an office. When you sit alone in silence, it can get incredibly dull, and that is when you will lose focus and get distracted. Although this may not work for everyone, some people find that playing background music helps them to concentrate.

  1. Write to-do lists

You will need to be good at planning your day when you are working remotely, and the best way to do that is to have a daily to-do list. You will also need to keep a schedule of weekly and monthly targets. Depending on the type of work that you are doing, you may find it helpful to allocate time slots in the day for each piece of work. If you have a timed to-do list, it will help to prevent you from spending too much time on a single task.

  1. Take breaks

When you are working in an office, you do not focus on work 100% of the time. Do not expect to be able to that when you are working at home. At work, you would have people to talk to you, you would take a coffee break with your co-workers, or you might stop for a chat at the water cooler. When you are working from home, though, you will have to make sure that you get breaks from your work. Set times for ten-minute breaks. Get up from your desk, walk around, or go outside and get some fresh air. If you try to work right through the day without resting at all, you will get tired and lose concentration.

  1. Identify your distractions

One of the best ways to avoid getting distracted is to know what it is that is likely to take your focus off your work. If you know that a ten minute catch up with friends on Facebook is going to lead to an hour wasted, leave updating Facebook until the end of the day. If you find that watching one YouTube video usually leads to YouTube video binge, stay out of YouTube. Yes, these things are easier said than done, but the only way to be productive when you are working from home is to be disciplined.

  1. Get out of your home occasionally

If you are not careful when you are working from home, you may find yourself not leaving the building for days in a row. Staying in your home for a long time like that would not be healthy, and it will not help your productivity. When you take a lunch break, take a walk in a park or around the block. And mix things up sometimes by working in a coffee shop instead of inside your home.

  1. Avoid working on one task all day

Most people find it helpful to do a series of different tasks through the course of the day rather than trying to complete one single task. When you do not have the general buzz of an office to keep you alert, a long day focused on one thing can make you tired and bored. Switching between tasks helps to break up the day, and variety will help to keep you alert.

  1. Socialize when the working day is over

When you do stop working at the end of the day, take time to be with your family, or socialize with friends. Working from home can be incredibly isolating, so you need to get a break from being stuck alone at home in front of your computer and be with people. If you become too isolated, you will find that one day rolls straight into the next, and you will get frustrated by working from home.

Conclusion

When you first start working from home, you may find it tricky to get into a routine at first. It is a good idea to keep a record of what you spend your day doing. Then, you can look back at the end of the day and see where you could have saved some time. Of course, the above tips will not work for everyone. You may find better ways to avoid distractions. The crucial thing to take away from this article is that it is easy to lose concentration when you are working at home. Be warned!
