Continuous Improvement
“Hawaii, like the rest of the U.S., is finally in a positive growth mode,” Mike explains. “We are seeing solid economic growth for the first time in a long time, and homebuilding is on solid ground.
Our biggest opportunity is being positioned for, and capable of handling, the increase in demand that is already here and coming our way.”
HPM Building Supply has strategically positioned itself for positive growth not only through its services, but also through its people. Jason illuminates that over the years, the level of competency, skill set, industry knowledge and paramount practices that have evolved through the company’s management team has allowed HPM’s level of leadership, vision and horsepower to surpass past performance.
Mike adds, “The initiatives that result from the energy and thoughtfulness of all of our employees are making a very big difference in our company, and will continue to do so in the years to come.”
Similar to other businesses, HPM Building Supply works hard to ensure its operational tasks are handled efficiently. Jason says, however, that because the company is situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, mastering supply chain and logistical issues are crucial in running the business effectively. The company’s purchasing and supply chain team oversees vendors and company wide purchasing of materials, closely monitoring and optimizing the supply chain.
“We strongly believe that if we can ensure reliability and in-flow of product on a day-to-day basis, and really tackle and master the supply chain, that will give us an advantage over everyone else,” Jason adds.
Another benefit HPM Building Supply nurtures carefully is its employee training. Because each team member is an owner of the company, his/her personal success mirrors the outcome of HPM. SumTotal Maestro, a learning management system currently being implemented, will allow the company to work with every employee to keep track of training and development milestones while ensuring a positive career growth path. The business has also invested in TINYpulse, a web-based engagement tool for employees, allowing for insight, trends and opportunities to be shared and acted upon within the company.
“Our focus is 100% about our customers,” Mike says. “By the same token, we are a very employee-centric company. Our employees are the owners of our company, and we spend a lot of time sharing that information with them.”
