IN DEPTH EXTRA: Deck Fasteners

PrimeSource too has introduced smaller packages in jars, with the appropriate number of fasteners for a certain square footage of deck. “They allow customers to buy fasteners quickly and easily in the increments needed for that project,” says McFarland.

The durable packages hold up well at the site and can be reused after they’re empty. Grip-Rite stainless-steel screws can be used for exterior applications such as decks and gazebos. Countersinking bugle heads prevent pops, while Type 17 points reduce the need to pre-drill.

Tools Speed Installation
Many fastener makers also are introducing drivers and collated strips to help contractors speed up the process. “The market is bouncing back, and contractors want to increase their productivity now that they have jobs coming in faster,” says FastenMaster’s DiSanto. “They want to speed up their work and do something that differentiates them from the competition in appearance so they stand out. The key is to speed up productivity without reducing structural integrity.”

superdrive-75G5The SuperDrive 75G5, a heavy-duty deck-fastening tool from Grabber Construction Products, was designed to accurately secure
deck clips to joists and deck boards at the optimum angle. Configured for either top-drive screwing or deck clips with a 50-screw collated clip, it includes an extension that allows installations from a standing position.

Adds Grabber’s Wulfenstein, “Contractors like to use a screw gun with collated strips if possible. It creates a mechanical advantage that can meet both needs for hidden fasteners and speed.” Many companies also are adding extensions to their tools so contractors can install the fasteners from a standing position, increasing speed further.

“More contractors are requesting options they can use with cordless tools, including drills, impact hammers and our Quik Drive,” says Simpson StrongTie’s Park. “We engineered our newest products to optimize performance with cordless tools in mind and reduce driving torque. Reduced driving torque increases battery life to help the tool work longer and without having to put a lot of force on the tool, which can lead to user fatigue. This allows users to drive more screws in a shorter period of time.”

Keeping current with new products and customer needs will ensure dealers can help make each project successful. “Contractors want to make sure they have quality products that they can use quickly to complete the installation,” says GRK’s Romanski. “They want it to look good so they can be assured of getting referrals while not getting any callbacks that eat into their profits. They want the peace of mind that they can have long-term confidence in the products they use.”
