Indeed, while the Craftsman style that has dominated choices in recent years remains popular, it’s seeing its position challenged. “Modern, contemporary looks are definitely growing in popularity,” says John Plummer, president of GlassCraft Door Co. “The whole modern look is sweeping the country.” The firm’s Contemporary ollection, featuring clean lines similar to mid-century modern door looks, is selling well. “Sales have exceeded our projections. We are planning to expand our line to take advantage of that, to about double the number of options we have now.”
Others agree that contemporary styling is growing rapidly in popularity. “The contemporary design trend of the last few years has really taken off, with more customers demanding that style,” says Weather Shield’s Koester. “Homebuyers are looking for homes with clean lines, and manufacturers have started to group their products to target that desire. Now customers are looking at those options that weren’t really designed for the new contemporary styles and asking, ‘What else have you got?’”
Weather Shield redesigned its Contemporary Collection to stay in tune. “The frame is clean and flush with the sash,” Koester explains. “It eliminates the shadow line. It’s not a lot of big things, more little things that make it different and separate it from the Craftsman look that’s been popular for so long.” There is a move to more modern styles overall. “The flat door with four or five panes of glass is coming back,” says Randy Albaugh, director of sales at ProVia. “More modern styles are doing well.”
