IN DEPTH: Doors and Windows

Weather-Shield-Coastal-WindowsHomes in coastal areas can benefit from the Premium Coastal windows and patio doors offered by Weather Shield. The products feature enhancements designed to protect the color of the aluminum-clad exteriors and hardware. Homeowners can select from a variety of LifeGuard Impact glazing options that protect against wind-borne debris.

Focus on Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency remains a key driver for window products, but the ante continues to be raised. “There’s a lot more focus on energy efficiency today,” says Thermo-Tech’s Cook. “Homeowners are more aware of the need to consider ratings and tighten the home. They’re interested in passive-solar techniques and triple-pane glass options. It’s a very good thing. We can manufacture products to that higher end to fill that niche, and they’re becoming more popular.”

Jeld-Wen introduced a new midrange line of windows in April, targeting the trends the company sees occurring, says Souders. “The biggest trend we see is the continued focus on energy efficiency. That is still a big reason to replace windows in a home, and it’s a prime consideration when buying a new home. Homeowners want a good return on their investment, and one way they can do that is by reducing their heating and cooling bills. Energy efficiency is definitely one of the long-term trends we see continuing.”

They also assume efficiency has improved. “Over time, the push for energy efficiency has evolved,” says Thermo-Tech’s Cook. “Builders now promote passive-solar and highly energy-efficient homes as a way to differentiate themselves. That provides more visibility in the market, which leads homebuyers to be more aware of it, so they ask about it more.”

Efficiency is less of a concern for door products. “Energy efficiency in the door category is not as key as for the window category,” says Therma-Tru’s Contat. “Energy efficiency is an expectation. It needs to be addressed, but it’s not usually number one on the list. Homeowners have a list of core features they want to compare, and energy efficiency is usually further down the list when considering options.”
