Stainless-steel options are becoming dominant. “Builders know the value of that material, and customers are willing to invest more in railings today,” says AGS’ Harris. A 316 marine-grade, electro-polish finish is most popular. “It’s the most useful product for decks.” Adds Cable Connection’s Nourse, “We emphasize that stainless-steel railings are stain-less, they aren’t stain-proof. They do require some maintenance, especially in coastal areas.”
Aluminum styles are growing, says Jeremy Jordan, product manager at Fortress. “People want to find new alternatives, add new options and try different elements to stand out,” he says. Steel, too, is selling well. “In some areas, especially along the coasts where they expect steel will rust or need maintenance, it isn’t as big of a seller. But in many areas, steel railings are seen as a strong material, and they are selling well. Areas around the coasts will predominantly use aluminum railings to give owners peace of mind against rusting.”

Accessory Pieces Expand
Spindle options are expanding, too. “We’re seeing more baluster and spindle designs,” says Feeney’s Penny. “There are more shapes and materials, such as aluminum and powder-coated metal in all colors. They offer more options.” Fairway has introduced a new structural post mount, which is machine-threaded to accept cable rail fittings and support a high psi tension on the cable. “Consumers are looking to add new accessories to their deck and customize the look to make it more personal and reflect their home’s style,” says Hickey. “They’re using ancillary pieces to build out the look with accents and details of all types.”
Post caps likewise are growing. “Post caps are proliferating at an amazing speed,” Hickey notes. “There are whole companies now devoted to just doing decorative post caps and becoming incredibly successful. We have several options, but we’re very choosy about which styles we produce.”
