Mouldings Used Creatively
Creating unique decks encompasses the use of mouldings and boards, notes Versatex’s Kapres. “Homeowners are using mouldings to dress up their deck and outdoor spaces,” he reports. “They like the low maintenance and durability that our products offer over wood to provide a better appearance.” Versatex has emphasized that by expanding its warranty to a lifetime, fully transferable

Contractors are using PVC mouldings to create a variety of accents, including decorative rail systems, he says. “They will rout it just like wood to build railings. They like that it cuts like wood but won’t decay.”
The company also is selling more sheets and boards that are used creatively by installers. “We sell a lot to fabricators who do custom structures, such as pergolas and shade structures. There’s a huge push in that direction as homeowners use their deck more. Contractors are suggesting those additions, and they are easy to create with our products.”
In this case, kit approaches aren’t preferred, Kapres adds. “Our customers gravitate to the uniqueness that our products can provide rather than to a basic kit of similar parts. Our products play to the customizing end of the market. It differentiates them and helps them make the sale if they can do design-build pieces for homeowners.”
Deciding what styles to stock requires knowing the local market, as it does for all of these rapidly expanding categories where choices are so numerous. “For dealers, the key to selling these products comes down to examining their market and seeing what trends are occurring with their customers and what will fit with their inventory best,” Kapres says. “Then they need to show them
off in displays out front or in the deck showroom to help customers see ideas and make connections.”
