Homeowners also are driving the trend. “There’s definitely a growing market for decorative pieces,” says Troy Sinks, national sales manager for KOMA Building Products. “Homeowners are investing more in their homes and they want low-maintenance products everywhere—but they also want to stand out from their neighbors and have a high-quality look. Builders are also looking for that advantage to differentiate their homes from their competitors.”
Product Expansions Continue
That has led many suppliers to continue to expand their lines. “We add two to three profiles every year to keep our line growing and to meet the growing demand for new pieces,” says Versatex’s Kapres. Royal Building Products added a one-piece crown moulding with a return to help contractors avoid complicated miter cuts on corners, says Steve Booz, vice president of new product development. “It’s been a huge hit with contractors. It makes it much easier and faster to install.”

Ply Gem has big plans for the category this year. “We’re trying to drive a change in the thinking about mouldings and what they can do,” Short says. The company is introducing an expanded breadth of products divided into two categories: residential and engineered. Residential products, such as corners, fascia and frieze boards, are geared to contractors and offer a laminated film that peels off once the trim is in place. Engineered pieces are geared to fabricators and feature a composition that will act and bend more like wood.
