IN DEPTH: Siding

Estate Vinyl SidingRoyal Building Products has introduced Estate vinyl siding, which features a realistic woodgrain and is said to exceed industry standards for durability and performance. It features a 5/8-inch butt height, providing strong shadow lines. A teardrop-lock design provides easy installation, while a partial rollover hem provides high wind-load resistance.

Longer Lengths
Lengths of pieces also are growing, in part to aid the aesthetic design. “The 16′ and 25′ lengths are more sought after today to eliminate seams and create fewer cuts and less waste,” says LP’s Maddern. “If dealers can offer them, it gives remodelers an edge.” It also aids the dealers. “Most big-box stores can’t stock those lengths because their racks won’t handle them.”

Adds ProVia’s Tybor, “Contractors often are looking for longer lengths to eliminate seams wherever possible. There’s been an uptick in sales in longer lengths. Our 16′ sizes in multiple profiles have grown in popularity.” “Contractors want to reduce seams,” confirms CertainTeed’s Kirn. The company now offers a 25′ length to satisfy demand for longer lengths.

That’s also proven true for cedar products, WRCLA’s Mackie notes. “Longer lengths are desired, which has led to a trend for more finger-jointed and edge-glued materials. They offer the advantage of providing wood that has been dried to its ideal moisture content.” The finger-jointed products typically are sold preprimed and topcoated due to the natural color variations that occur in each piece.

But longer lengths aren’t preferred universally. “They can be harder to handle,” notes Royal’s Booz. “It takes two people to maneuver some of them.

So whether a contractor wants to use those lengths to get the benefits depends on the application and the size of their crew.” Tapco also found that contractors like the shorter length of its 5′ shake panels. “The pattern hides seams, so customers don’t have that concern,” Wierengo explains. “One person can easily handle the pieces.”
