A Kansas lumberyard is celebrating 70 years in business this month. Kropf Lumber of Hesston, Kan. was established in 1948 when Mr. and Mrs. Ivan S. Kropf, who owned and operated a sawmill in Oregon, purchased the lumberyard in Hesston. The company was launched with just two employees.
For 70 years, Kropf Lumber has grown along with Hesston, including a complete rebuild after a 1990 tornado. Today, Knopf Lumber employs nearly 40 full-time employees and is owned by Ken Kropf, grandson of the founder.
