LAT names Legislative Champion

Texas State Rep. Jeff Leach has been named a 2021 LAT Legislative Champion. He received the award from LAT's Executive Vice President Mireya Zapata at LAT's 135th Convention & Expo on Sept.14 in Frisco, Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Lumbermen’s Association of Texas (LAT), a non-profit trade association that represents lumber and building material dealers and the LBM industry in Texas, has selected State Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano) as a LAT Legislative Champion award recipient.

“Chairman Leach is a relentless, passionate advocate for the building materials industry at the Texas legislature,” said Harley “Bubba” Finnell, president of the LAT Board of Directors and an owner at Oldham Lumber Company in Dallas, Texas. “Our membership shared with Chairman Leach the challenges we were having maintaining insurance and defending our truck drivers; the lifeline of our businesses and critical to our ability to deliver building materials to job sites across our state. He spearheaded the campaign to do something about frivolous lawsuits in trucking accidents and we are grateful for his efforts.”

During the recent 87th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature, Chairman Leach passed House Bill 19, litigation reform in trucking accidents that requires bifurcation of a trial arising from a commercial vehicle accident, limits certain types of discovery and requires admission of videos and photographs of the accident. He also led the passage of the Pandemic Liability Protection Act, Senate Bill 6 by Senator Kelly Hancock, in the Texas House.

“Chairman Leach’s hard work and success will result in meaningful, tangible relief for independent, family-owned lumberyards like ours,” said Jack Foxworth, president and CEO of Foxworth-Galbraith Lumber Company, a business headquartered in Plano and House District 67. “We are so proud that our state representative led the charge to pass two key bills for the Texas lumber and building materials industry, and all essential businesses in our state, who stayed open in support of our communities during the pandemic.”

“The Texas lumber building materials industry has been key to our state’s economic recovery and it was an honor to work with LAT on behalf of its membership at the Texas Legislature,” said Rep. Leach. “I look forward to many more years of working together in support of pro-business legislation that supports these Texas employers and the great work that they do in communities all across our state.”

Chairman Leach was presented the LAT Legislative Champion award at its 135th Convention & Expo on Sept. 14 in Frisco, Texas.
