MI Windows and Doors raises more than $1 million at annual charity event

MI Windows and Doors raised more than $1 million for its philanthropic organization, the MI Charitable Foundation, at its 21st annual golf tournament and charity auction. The event, held June 3-5 in Hershey, Penn., is the largest fundraiser for the MI Foundation, which supports a number of causes, including veterans affairs, local outreach, children’s wellbeing and the fight against cancer, with a specific emphasis on pediatric cancer.

“We’re just blown away by the charitable spirit of our business partners,” said MI CEO Matt DeSoto, who also pointed out that MI Windows covers all administrative costs for the Foundation, including this event. “We set out trying to make a difference in people’s lives, and I believe we’re really accomplishing that.”

The event included two golf tournaments played over two days at Hershey Country Club. There were also two dinner auctions that included speakers from two of the many organizations that the MI Foundation supports. On the first night, Brady Lucas talked about his experiences as a survivor of pediatric cancer and how his family was supported by Four Diamonds. Lucas now works for Four Diamonds, an organization at Penn State Children’s Hospital that provides financial support and world-class medical care to 500 families every year. Four Diamonds also funds childhood cancer research to benefit children everywhere.

On the second night, retired Army Sergeant Patrick Wickens spoke about his life as an injured Veteran. Wickens, who lost a leg while serving in Iraq in 2004, will soon move with his wife and two young sons into a new accessible home in Florida. Homes For Our Troops, a nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, is funding the project. MI donates windows to these specially adapted homes, making injured Veterans’ lives safer and more convenient.

“Much of the work that the MI Foundation supports goes toward helping children with cancer and Veterans,” said Kourtney Miles, the MI Foundation’s Charitable Foundation Specialist. “We’re really pleased to be able to partner with organizations like Four Diamonds and Homes For Our Troops.”
