Purchasing, Event Changes Highlight Do it Best Fall Market

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – New products, savings opportunities and event enhancements combined to create a productive Do it Best Fall Market, held October 7-10 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

Delivering the best products
This fall market is designed to provide Do it Best member-owners opportunities to save on products to drive more customer traffic to their stores and increase their profitability.

An addition to this market was the debut of the Pro/Tradesman Showcase, which offered 5,600 square feet of product displays and planograms for members currently selling to—or interested in attracting—contractors, tradesmen and building professionals. The co-op also introduced its member-exclusive Outdoor Expressions brand, which features a full range of  outdoor living products like patio furniture, solar lights and fire pits, and expanding on its Best Garden line of hose end watering products for spring.

Dan Starr
Do it Best President and CEO Dan Starr delivers his President’s Address at the Do it Best Fall Market.

“As always, our focus is on providing our members the most productive, enjoyable and valuable market experience we can,” explained Do it Best Corp. President and CEO Dan Starr. “And this fall market is clear evidence that we are always exploring ways to make these already great events even better.”

The fall market featured a number of enhancements to its event schedule, all geared toward improving the overall flow and experience for attending members. Enhancements include moving the Market Kickoff to Friday afternoon to serve as a true lead-off to the weekend; moving the Merchandising Preview to Saturday morning to generate additional member excitement prior to the official opening of the market floor; and expanding networking opportunities for LBM members on Friday with both an LBM Industry Update luncheon and evening LBM Reception.

Indeed, the event’s name itself has changed to the Do it Best Fall Market (and Spring Market beginning in 2017), which offers the co-op flexibility to shift the events from their traditional October and May dates beginning in 2020 to better align with members’ schedules. One thing that has not changed, however, is the location, as Do it Best Corp. is celebrating its 40th consecutive year of hosting its markets in Indianapolis.

“In terms of logistics, location and experience, Indy continues to be the ideal partner for us and our members,” Starr added. “At the same time, we’re excited about bringing these market enhancements to our members and seeing how they positively impact their overall experiences.”

Milestones and markers
The fall market represented Starr’s first time as president and CEO to address the full membership after succeeding Bob Taylor in January. He used a portion of his President’s Address at the annual Shareholders’ Meeting on Sunday evening to highlight two other milestones realized during fiscal year 2016: surpassing $3 billion in annual sales, and distributing member rebates in excess of $100 million for the 13th consecutive year.

“We are proud to celebrate both of these achievements,” Starr said. “Our supply-chain excellence and industry-lowest cost of operations enable us to provide more in rebates to our members – and they in turn are able to reinvest in their businesses grow their sales and expand their operations. We take our role as effective stewards of our members’ investment in their co-op very seriously, and both of these accomplishments are testament to that.”
