VASSAR, Mich. — With the ceremonial cutting of a 2×4, Vassar Building Center opened the doors to its brand-new home center store. Co-owners Mike and Brenda MacKay welcomed the community, city officials, and invited guests to a new shopping experience not far from the location they called home since 1964.

“We couldn’t be more excited for everyone to experience the new Vassar Building Center,” said Mike MacKay. “From the weekend DIYer to the pro contractor, we’ve always been proud of the unparalleled service we offer. Now, with our new and much larger store, we’ve been able to greatly expand our product selection to meet all our customers’ project needs.”

The new location includes nearly 20,000 square feet of hardware, plumbing, electrical, and hand and power tools, along with new or expanded categories like lawn and garden, work clothing, and The Color Bar, a comprehensive paint destination. The new Vassar Building Center also features a kitchen and bath design center and a full service lumberyard.

“Our new store represents a lot of work from everyone on the Vassar team,” said MacKay. “I especially want to recognize the contributions by our store manager Adam Daugharty as well as the Do it Best store design team, led by former Vassar Building Center employee Cherié (Swaffer) Jacobs. And special thanks to Matt Bronner, Mike Platt, and Bronner Construction for making those plans come alive. Everyone rallied to deliver what you see today.”

Vassar Building Center was founded in 1957 by Joe Koch Sr., Joe Koch Jr., and Kenny Beard. Larry and Shirley Putman bought the business with partners Jim and Kim Esckelson in 1985 before becoming sole owners in 1988. The Putmans’ daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Mike MacKay, purchased the store in 2011.
