SEATTLE — Weyerhaeuser has announced that its wood products business will be the educational sponsor for “The House That She Built,” including the Girl Scouts of the United States of America at-home patch and charm program, plus the associated standard event kit resources; including a project outline, facilitator instructions, along with early elementary STEAM curriculum that highlights the exciting opportunities for all children, especially girls, to choose a career in building and construction.
“We’re proud to be a part of “The House That She Built” at-home patch and charm program for the Girl Scouts and developing early elementary STEAM curriculum,” said Amy Warren, director of business process and development for Weyerhaeuser Distribution. “With three percent of the onsite workforce in housing being women, it is important to generate excitement with future generations and spotlight the importance of trades professionals’ contributions to our communities.”
Inspiration for the Girl Scouts at-home patch and charm program and associated elementary school curriculum spurred from the children’s book “The House That She Built,” authored by Mollie Elkman and Georgia Castellano. The driver behind Elkman and Castellano’s passion to write and illustrate this inspirational book was to share the story of the Utah Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Professional Women in Building’s design and construction of an all-women-built home that was showcased in the 2021 Utah Valley Parade of Homes.
“We didn’t want to stop promoting the value women add in building and construction after the home was complete and the homeowners had their keys in hand,” said Mollie Elkman, owner and president of Group Two Advertising. “Partnering with the Girl Scouts, overseeing the development of the STEAM curriculum and knowing that it will be incorporated into elementary is just the beginning!”
The Girl Scout at-home patch and charm program will launch on Saturday, March 26 (11 a.m. PST). Elkman, along with collaborative teams, will continue developing early elementary curriculum and plan for full execution of strategic partnerships between related non-profits, building materials suppliers, and building materials dealers.
