Much has been written about labor shortages amongst trades people. Make no mistake, this shortage impacts lumber and building materials (LBM) dealers. Labor availability may define the number of construction projects that a builder can undertake, the rate at which material is needed, and product mix as more builders switch to panelized and pre-fabricated components.
However, this article focuses on the challenges of labor shortages and turnover at the LBM dealer businesses themselves. Further, we will offer some insights on how dealers can, in the context of today’s business realities, attract, retain, and make best use of employees at all levels in the company.
